Pawz For Thought
Animal rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing or abandoned & ill-treated animals
Pawz for Thought is a small but very active animal charity operating throughout the North East of England. We were formed as a positive response to the distressingly high number of animal welfare issues in the region. The charity has no paid staff and everything we achieve is through the hard work of volunteers who willingly give their time and money to improve the lives of abandoned or ill-treated animal in the area.
Despite rescuing, treating and re-homing hundreds of animals every year, we have yet to realise our dream of a dedicated centre. In the meantime, whilst renting a small number of kennel spaces, the majority of our animals are kept in foster homes. Some of our older animals suffering from long term medical problems are in permanent foster homes, living out their final years in unaccustomed comfort.
Our policy of trying never to turn away an animal or owner in desperate need , means we always have a very wide variety of animals requiring new homes. As well as kittens and puppies we inevitably have many middle aged and older animals that have hit hard times. Not to forget the numerous rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, rats, birds and occasionally reptiles which too often find themselves homeless.
We believe in tackling the animal welfare issues at source and therefore the charity has a very firm neutering policy and we ask new owners of puppies and kittens to commit to it as soon as the animals are old enough.
Although we have no paid employees we still need to raise a considerable sum of money to fund the charity. These expenses include veterinary treatment, food bills and overheads, we work hard to keep these to a minimum. Much of out income is derived from our shop which is staffed by volunteers. Money is also raised through varied fund raising events, driven by the many personal initiatives of our supporters. For practical and economic reasons a dedicated centre is essential, therefore each month a proportion of our fund raising is transferred to a building fund.
How can you help?
We are always extremely grateful for donations of good quality second hand articles and gifts of cat or dog food. If you are interested in giving either of your time to work in the shop, foster animals, run fundraising events or help out in any other way, please contact us as we are always on the looks out for committed volunteers to join the charity.
